It is the beginning of summer and Catherine is hoping her new next door neighbor can become her "next-door" friend, a friend that she can do all her favorite summer things with, a normal friend, a friendship that doesn't have to include her little brother David. David and his rules make Catherine's life anything but normal. This summer Catherine is determined to have the most perfect, normal summer but a new friend in her life soon shows Catherine that maybe a "normal" life isn't always the best.

This book would provide so many opportunities to open a dialogue about disabilities and the different challenges that come with having a disability or someone in your family having a disability. I think this book could also open up a discussion about words and how important they are. You could do an activity where the students create a word card for Jason and explain why they chose their word in a paragraph. Also, you could do an activity where you discuss the rules that Catherine gives to David and make a list of rules that the students think are important to know to get through life.
