Tuck Everlasting By Natalie Babbitt
Reading Level: 4-6
Genre: Fantasy
Awards: American Library Association Notable Children's Books
Winnie Foster lives behind an iron gate, in a house where nothing is ever out of order, with a mother and grandmother that rarely let her out of their sight. Winnie longs for the unknowns of the world outside the iron fence that encloses her yard and even contemplates running away but the unknown is a scary and dangerous place for Winnie or at least that is what she has been told. One day sitting in her yard Winnie meets a stranger in a yellow suit who takes an interest in the wood across the street from Winnie's house, a seemingly insignificant incident. The next day, Winnie finally decides to take those fateful steps out of her yard and she goes into the wood across the street. There she meets Jesse Tuck and his family. The Tucks are almost the exact opposite of Winnie's family not to mention the Tucks have a big secret that could change the world forever if anyone ever found out about it. Add in the man in the yellow suit from that seemingly insignificant encounter and Winnie is off on an adventure that takes her away from everything she thought she knew about life.
I could give my students the opportunity to choose from the following writing prompts:
1) Do you agree with Angus Tuck that living forever is a curse? Why or why not?
2) If you could live forever what would you spend forever doing? Why?
3) Who do you most relate to in Tuck Everlasting and why?
4) How do you think Winnie Foster was changed by meeting the Tuck family? How did her life change?
Also, we could watch the movie Tuck Everlasting in class and then compare and contrast the movie to the book.
