My Great-Aunt Arizona By Gloria Houston
Reading Level: 1-4
Genre: Biography
Awards: ALA Notable Children's Book
The story of the author's great-aunt Arizona and how she impacted kids for many years as a teacher. Arizona loved to read and to dream about far off places and it is with that same spirit she taught her students that they could do anything and go anywhere.
I would use this book as a read aloud and it could lead in to a discussion about one room school houses and what it was like to live in the days of one room school houses and talk about the notable people that were educated in one room school houses. Also, we could work on an activity to help learn comparing and contrasting and compare and contrast the one room school house and present day educational settings. We could also use persuasive writing to discuss the importance of school.
