The Spiderwick Chronicles: The Field Guide By Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Reading Level: 4-6
Genre: Fantasy

The Grace children have moved into their great-aunt Lucinda's house with their mom.  The house is described as looking like "a dozen shacks piled on top of one another" and their great-aunt is rumored to be crazy.  As the Grace children begin to explore their new home strange things start happening and when Jared finds a secret room with clues that lead him to a mysterious book, the Grace children begin to question whether their great-aunt Lucinda is actually crazy or is she telling the truth.

The first book of this series just introduces that reader to the world that is contained in the series so after reading this it could be a great opportunity to do exercises in predicting what they students think will happen next.  Also, with this book you could have the students create their own creatures to put into a classroom field guide which could be tied to biology and the discovery of new species in real life.
